Secret Supplies & Skills

Today: cutting a perfect straight edge!

It may sound like a simple thing, but getting a clean straight cut when you’re creating isn’t always easy. I’ve tried little sliding blade paper cutters, I’ve tried scissors, and a massive expensive paper cutter….the scary kind, if you have kids around! So I’ve stuck with my old college graphic design class method, with a tweak.

So here’s the Supplies you need for a clean straight cut:

  1. a cutting board
  2. a metal or metal edged ruler
  3. here’s the tweak…a sheetrock knife! Skip the awkward craft knife and go straight for the man’s tool! You can find one at a hardware store. (and I spray painted mine turquoise….because, well, turquoise! )
You can find the cute Kitty Journal cards HERE!

Then the Skill….

  1. line up your ruler …either on a line on your paper or using the ruler on your cutting mat.
  2. with the knife blade perpendicular to the paper, flat up again the ruler, pull the knife towards you. PLEASE… keep your fingers out of the way!! Start with light pressure and repeat the same cut until it goes through the paper. A thick piece of cardboard may take 3 or 4 passes… that’s the key to a clean cut.

And that’s it!! So easy…and so effective! Tell me you don’t love it!

Till next time!

Quick & Creative: DIY Washi Tape Strips

Printables, Quick & Creative

I just love making gifts and packages as pretty as possible…don’t you?

As I was putting some pretty packages together, it occurred to me that maybe you all would enjoy a little How-To and free printable pattern for making your own Mini Washi Tape!  I just figured this out awhile ago… and now use it often to make all my Happy Mail pretty!

It’s super Cute…super Easy… and much cheaper than real Washi Tape! 🙂

All you need is:

– 1/2x 1 3/4 inch mailing labels

– printable pattern (I gotcha covered on this one!)

– pinking shears

– color printer

What you do:

1. Just click on the gingham patterns at the end of this post to make them full size and save them to your desktop

2. Open in pretty much any applications… anything that will open a photo (.jpeg file) and allow you to print it full sized (approx. 8 1/2 x 11)

3. Print pattern on label paper

4. Peel off the paper in the margin areas (not the label part) so that just the labels are left.

5. Then cut into strips, with pinking shears,  along edges of each column of labels… as shown in photo.

It’s that EASY!  Now you can use them for just about anything!… you can even write on them!

*** You could also do the same thing with round labels and make your own sticker/seals… (see the photos below! and visit my ETSY SHOP for MANY more printable patterns/digital papers!)

Hi Friends!

I have a little gift for you today! Who doesn’t love something given to them?!

Well, do you remember these doodle border note card/place cards?  They have been a huge hit, as far as printables go on my old blog 🙂 So I thought I’d share this coordinating larger version of them.  I figured these could be used for a number of things:

-Stationery… to write a friendly note on.

-Pages for journaling… add to your journal or planner.

-Invites… simply print out, then reprint text on them.

-Signs or large labels… for the home or for a party, like on a food table.

Anyways, those are just a few ideas!  Leave a cheery hello if you download them, and let me know what you might use them for, kay?  And don’t forget to go download the matching mini note cards/place cards!

Simply print out on whatever kind of paper you’d like and cut down the middle!

*As always… file for personal use only.  File and printed product not for resale or profit of any kind.

3 tips to get started bible journaling

Bible Journaling

If you love scripture and you love creativity, (and if you’re reading this post!) you’ve probably considered jumping on the bandwagon of bible journaling.  But where do you start!?  And what’s really necessary to get started?

You don’t actually need a special journaling bible to start.

In fact, It might be BEST to start with a blank journal along side your regular bible.  During your regular daily bible reading time, use your journal to note a verse that really resonated with you.  Then after your reading time is done, or whenever, grab whatever supplies you have on hand.  Simply write out your verse or practice different hand-writing techniques. Doodle around your text and add some color if you’d like!  Grab some stickers, washi, paper scraps, markers, etc. and enjoy meditating on the verse while you experiment.

Once you have your journaling bible, start simple!

Once you’ve purchased your journaling bible (Crossway makes single column bibles that are great), start with just a pen!  Pigma Micron 01 ink pens by Sakura are perfect.   Journal your response to a passage, rewrite a key verse, or doodle a bit.  The fresh blank margins of a new bible can be intimidating, so take you time and just get comfortable!  Set aside any expectations you have….it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to be a reflection of your time in God’s word.  At the end of the day, the goal is God’s word sinking deep into your heart and sweet fellowship with your Heavenly Father.

Pick a medium that you feel comfortable with.

Once you’re comfortable in your new bible, pick a medium that’s not scary to you.  Colored pencils are wonderful to start with…they’re mess free, easy to use, and don’t bleed at all!  Maybe you love stamps or love to draw with pencils.  And if you’re not comfortable with any medium, start with washi, stickers, or paper embellishments!  You don’t need to be artistic to dive in.

You’re bible journaling!

Hey guess what!? If you’ve put pen to paper you’re officially bible journaling!  You’ve made it past the hardest part…just getting started.  Now the possibilities are endless.  You can explore new techniques and products little by little as you feel inspired and enjoy that sweet spot where a heart for God and a love of creativity meet!
